Three cheers for Barbara Smith's insightful commentary on feminism and what a real feminist is versus the now worn-out Gloria Steinem type ("New face of American feminism," Sept. 18 letter). It is not too much to say that Sarah Palin in many ways models this new feminism, which sees women not in some unisex light but as distinctly female and complementary to the male.
As Smith points out, one aspect of this "new" feminism is the increasing realization of the tragedy of abortion, which takes more than a million innocent lives annually in America alone. That every person has the right to life seems obvious and it is hard to understand why some believe the unborn are an exception. Without this right all others are meaningless!
