The six nations in negotiations on the denuclearization of North Korea last week agreed on basic principles for verifying the North's declaration of its nuclear programs.
The agreement produced in Beijing is only a rough agreement. Working out the details and conducting strict verification of North Korea's list of nuclear programs are imperative to accelerate the process of ridding North Korea of its nuclear programs and weapons.
The participating nations in the six-party talks agreed that their experts will visit sites, review documents and interview North Korean nuclear engineers. It was also agreed that, if necessary, the International Atomic Energy Agency will be asked to give support and advice. But such matters as what sites to visit and when to visit them, what procedures to take in collecting samples, and to what extent the IAEA should involve itself have been left undecided.
