I am saddened but not surprised by the backlash that Peter Singer's May 19 article, "If there is a god, then why is there suffering?," has received. At a loss for a logical argument against his proposal, many have resigned to attacking Singer's character or making completely irrelevant claims.
These tantrums are typical of childlike adults who lean on the crutch that religion provides by absolving them of responsibility for their actions and assuring them that through blind obedience they will earn a spot in heaven etc. This is why they lash out so vehemently when someone questions their religion.
If their faith were taken from them, they would have to grow up, take responsibility for their actions and recognize the reality of life without a god controlling everything, a priest telling them what to do, and a spot in paradise assured.
