Peter Singer's May 19 article, "If there's a god, then why is there suffering," seemed a little . . . hmmm . . . how would Albert Einstein put it? Childish.
I don't see why there should be a sense of conflict about the idea that God and suffering exist simultaneously. One viewing of any National Geographic-type documentary of a shrinking waterhole confirms both: that there are a myriad of complex creatures, each with its own set of intricate working parts (suggesting some kind of creator), all desperately trying to stay alive via the ever shrinking water source. The monkey risks its neck only to be devoured by the equally ill-fated crocodile.
This little play of misfortune gets played out on our planet continuously in countless versions. Just what or who the director is I haven't the arrogance to assume, but it is certain that misery is in the script.
