Bring on a republic. That's one clear demand to come out of the biggest talk-fest ever stage-managed in Canberra. And new Prime Minister Kevin Rudd is just the leader to bring it on.

And while he's at it, let Rudd declare Aborigines' rights over Australia's land and sea. Not to mention cheap loans to the nation's poor, allowing in guest workers from South Pacific countries and new taxes on coal mining to help save the planet. Yes, it was that kind of talk-shop.

The idea behind Summit 2020 in Parliament House has merit. Reform-minded Rudd, a few months into running the country, called on a startled electorate to give him "big ideas." Needless to say, every frustrated citizen sought to swarm into Canberra for the much-ballyhooed weekend.
