Regarding the April 1 article "20 teachers punished over 'Kimigayo' row": In my view not facing one's country's flag at important public functions, especially in the presence of students, is a selfish and highly disrespectful act sending the wrong message about what loyal patriotism for a country and its people is all about.
Better that a person of that ilk not be in attendance, i.e. voluntarily absent themselves. In my opinion, a public gathering for a serious institutional function is not the place to make a disrespectful gesture against one's own country and those who have served it!
