It was interesting to see the responses from individuals, especially Japanese, who answered the Nov. 27 Views From the Street question, "Does fingerprinting foreign arrivals help Japan in its 'war on terror'?"

One man mentioned that foreign crime is rising, so the system is necessary. Perhaps someone should explain to him that the system is to be used for antiterrorism purposes only, not to halt foreign thievery, rape etc. Someone should also inform him that, in fact, foreign crime has been decreasing, not increasing. Of course, he wouldn't be interested in foreign affairs, and no doubt follows the xenophobic police reports that attempt to place foreigners in a bad light.

The comment from one of the women is even more hilarious. To state that she is afraid of going on the train -- as if foreigners are going to rape poor helpless Japanese women on the train and that this new system will prevent that from happening -- is just a classic case of the media doing its job of portraying foreigners in a negative light. They are brainwashing the Japanese public and doing a very good job.
