In his Nov. 25 letter letter, "Foreigners overrate themselves," Peter Stevenson makes some interesting points that I tend to agree with. Still, one needs to ask who is really behind the hornet's nest of cameras, fingerprinting, photographing, delays at airports, etc. worldwide. Beyond a doubt, it is the United States, because of 9/11.
Japan and the world are only following the methods that many now say and know don't stop terrorists from entering a country. As the world knows, the U.S. has borders with free and open illegal immigration and drug smuggling. The Japanese are an honorable people, so they should remain Japanese and continue to show kindness and courtesy to those of us who have chosen to live among them.
Japan must lead the world in a new direction and to a brighter future. It can follow the West if it must with cameras, fingerprinting and etc. to keep the country free of terrorists or even "foreigners who overrate themselves," but things will only get worse if Japan doesn't take the lead in these matters.
