Regarding the Nov. 1 front-page article "Pension woes may never be solved": As a foreigner married to a Japanese who has paid into a pension account over decades, I am appalled by the record-keeping debacle and disgusted by the cavalier assertion that pursuing responsible executives on which to lay the blame is not worth pursuing. The Japanese public has every right to have the situation fully illustrated as though the disaster was taking place now.
The reasons for this should be manifold and boldly obvious. But should the official who croaked out this utterance be wondering, the foremost reason is that darkness or obscurity surrounding such a public calamity can lead only to the possibility of future misadventures, as well as a protraction of current public mistrust. Social democracy demands more transparency than the current government is willing to encourage.
