I was astounded by Manuel Sandoval's Oct. 25 letter, "Don't judge marines too fast" (which was a response to the Oct. 20 article "Four marines investigated for rape"). Even for the well-respected members of the U.S. military, if wrongdoing is suspected it needs to be investigated.
An investigation has nothing to do with what Sandoval wrongly expects "from a woman working in a bar." Even more so, an investigation has nothing to do with U.S. military involvement in Japan or other foreign countries. Having military bases around the world does not give soldiers free reign to do what they want, and that especially includes rape.
By equating overseas involvement with criminal impunity, Sandoval not only does a grave disservice to the reputation of U.S. soldiers working abroad but also embarrasses himself with a disgusting outlook concerning women.
