Regarding the Oct. 20 article "Repeat offender sentenced to 14 years for confining and abusing four females": This is the most unbelievable story I have heard in a long time. It displays a common Japanese pattern: If you fake profound remorse even after having lied as long as circumstances would permit, you can get away with a comparatively light sentence. If you don't, you are in deep trouble. This young man needs psychological counseling rather than 14 years(!) in jail.

And the girls must be extraordinarily stupid. One of them was even confined in a hotel without trying to escape! Someone must have provided food -- either the young man (26) or one of the girls. Since the young man is handsome in a sinister way, it is more likely that the girls accused him after each realized that she was not his "one and only."
