Regarding the Sept. 26 article "'Last samurai' still has support in thankful Japan": For many Peruvians like myself, Alberto Fujimori (recently extradited from Chile to Peru) is the greatest Peruvian President of the last century.

Even if he made a pact with corrupt Montesinos, and even if he bribed corrupt politicians and mafia lords, Fujimori built schools, roads and health-care clinics in remote areas of Peru. The poorest people had food with Fujimori.

What were his best achievements? Getting rid of the Shining Path guerrillas and reducing inflation.

If he dies in jail, Fujimori will still be my hero -- a hero of the poor. I implore Japan to help Fujimori. Do not let corrupt Peruvian politicians lay a hand on him.
