Regarding the July 14 article "Conservatives want U.S. reps to kill apology motion": Prostitutes have been used by soldiers in every military since the beginning of time, and still are today. They can be found near every military base in every country. With regard to the past, whether women became prostitutes by choice, or were "coerced" or "forced" into that way of life, is impossible to tell now.

I question the motives of U.S. Rep. Mike Honda, apparently the main sponsor of the ridiculous motion (for a congressional resolution seeking Japan's apology for forcing young women into sex slavery during World War II). It does nothing except sour relations between Japan and the United States, and reinforces the view that the U.S. is an unreliable and inconsistent friend and ally that cannot be trusted.

Could it be that Honda has many voters of Chinese and Korean origins among his constituents whose votes he needs? The cynicism of this man and his cohort, Rep. Tom Lantos, is beyond belief. Either it is no more than an attempt to foster hatred for personal gain, or a case of incredible naivete and ignorance.

Perhaps the Japanese Diet should adopt a motion demanding an apology from the U.S. for dropping A-bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which is a real documented war crime and atrocity. Incidentally, I am neither Japanese nor American, but I am sometimes amazed at the stupidity of the U.S. Congress, Senate and executive offices.
