Few realize that in the three decades of its existence, United Nations University (UNU) has been developing into a global organization comprising UNU enter in To- kyo and 12 Research and Training Centers and Programs (RTC/Ps) around the world, working in cooperation with a large, global network of associated and cooperating institutions, and individual scholars and scientists. UNU Center in Tokyo directs and administers the entire UNU system. It is also the place where new initiatives are developed, and where results from the entire system are synthesized and translated into policy recommendations.

The newest UNU RTC/P -- UNU Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS) -- was established in Bonn in December 2003, funded by annual contributions from the German federal government and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Its expertise relates to flood plains and deltas, with an emphasis on urban centers. The main focus of UNU-EHS activities is environmental risk and the vulnerability of individuals and societies. Established as a small, lean organization, UNU-EHS has proved successful in its activities and networks.
