WASHINGTON -- For more than a year American politics has focused on war in Iraq. But the Supreme Court's decision voiding state antisodomy laws has inflamed the culture war in America. Conservative religious groups prophesy a moral apocalypse; Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist is calling for a federal constitutional amendment on marriage.
In Lawrence v. Texas, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned antisodomy laws because they intruded in the "realm of personal liberty which the government may not enter."
Obviously, one can criticize the Lawrence case on constitutional grounds. Many religious conservatives, however, contend not only that the ruling is wrong, but that the policy is right. They believe police belong in people's bedrooms. They aren't against fighting the culture war. They want the government on their side, jailing people because of how they have sex with whom.
