HONG KONG -- Myanmar's military junta has reacted to growing international disquiet over its current crackdown on the country's duly elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi and the National League for Democracy by telling lies that only increase fears for her personal survival.
Suu Kyi and the NLD won 392 of 485 seats in the last general election in Myanmar (also known as Burma) in 1990, but the junta has never honored that result.
International anxiety increased initially after the ambush of Suu Kyi and her supporters when they were traveling in northern Myanmar on May 30. Varied international reactions were observable recently during the weeklong conferences of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in Phnom Penh.
