WASHINGTON -- President George W. Bush has now been in the Oval Office for a little more than one half year, and it has been the best of times and the worst of times for him.
He got off to a fast start. His ability to focus on his priorities is phenomenal and it paid off handsomely during the early months. From an early time in his campaign, he had put a massive tax cut at the top of his agenda for America. He sold it hard and often. He sold it as the cure to all that might ail the United States, from unemployment to acne. From day one in the Oval Office, it was his overriding priority and he brought all the resources he could muster into the effort to get it passed.
And he did. The tax cut of 2001 will be a centerpiece of any and all reviews of Bush's presidential career.
