In a rare diplomatic initiative toward curbing the global proliferation of nuclear weapons, Japan will host an international conference next month to step up efforts to prevent the spread of the deadly weapons in the Asia-Pacific region.
The conference will be held at a Tokyo hotel for two days, starting on June 27, under the joint sponsorship of Japan and the Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency, according to the Foreign Ministry.
The meeting will be attended by high-level government officials in charge of disarmament, nuclear nonproliferation and nuclear energy policy from 16 countries in the Asia-Pacific region, as well as top IAEA officials.
