Swedish Defense Minister Pal Jonson says his country — NATO's newest member state — is committed to deepening defense and security cooperation with Indo-Pacific countries through the military alliance, but also on a bilateral basis.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and the growing role played by North Korea, China and Iran in it, have highlighted the interconnectedness of the security threats for both Europe and Asia, Jonson said during an event at the University of Tokyo on Tuesday.
As a result, Stockholm plans to boost cooperation with Indo-Pacific partner nations in several key areas: defense policy dialogue, military presence as well as on defense materiel, innovation and technology, the minister said.
