Many municipalities at risk of damage from a possible Nankai Trough megaquake lack an understanding of how the government's warning system works, a government survey showed Tuesday.
The Cabinet Office survey found that 12.8% of at-risk municipalities were not aware of details of the system fully or sure what measures they should take when an advisory is issued to warn of the elevated risk of such a megaquake.
More than 60% said they were confused over how to respond to the "emergency information" alert that was issued for the first time under the system after a 7.1-magnitude temblor struck off the coast of Miyazaki Prefecture on Aug. 8.
