Nearly 30% of elementary and junior high school students from financially struggling families in Japan do not enjoy school, a survey by a public interest group showed Thursday.
According to the survey by the Tokyo-based Usnova, 10.9% said that school is "not fun at all," with 88.3% of them finding daily life difficult and 81.7% saying they often or sometimes feel like not doing anything. The proportion of students who said school is "not very fun" came to 17.1%.
The survey, taken online and through other methods between November and December 2023, covered 14,845 households including those on welfare. Valid responses were gained from 1,862 children, including 551 elementary and junior high school students, and 4,012 parents and other guardians.
