A Saitama Prefecture high school issued an apology Tuesday after three students took a car for a joyride on school grounds and crashed it late Saturday night, leaving one dead.
The accident occurred at around 11:50 p.m Saturday in the schoolyard next to a soccer field at Saitama Sakae High School.
The 17-year-old student in the passenger seat, who was reportedly leaning out of the window, suffered severe head injuries after the car rolled over. He was pronounced dead on Sunday after being rushed to the hospital. Neither the 16-year-old driver nor the 17-year-old sitting in the back were injured. All three students lived in the school dorm.
