A symposium related to the 750th anniversary of the 1274 Mongolian invasion of Japan by Kublai Khan's Yuan Dynasty was held at Kokugakuin University in Tokyo on Saturday.

Participants, including scholars from Mongolia, held discussions about Yuan Dynasty weapons and other tools found from the seabed off the city of Matsuura in Nagasaki Prefecture.

Many of the tools share characteristics similar to those of items used by nomads in Mongolia, said Erdenebat Ulambayar, head of the Department of Anthropology and Archaeology at the National University of Mongolia. He emphasized the need for joint research between Mongolian and Japanese experts.

After the symposium, an official from Mongolia's National Center for Cultural Heritage expressed hope that archaeological research, on the occasion of the 750th anniversary, could deepen mutual understanding between the two countries.
