The ruling Liberal Democratic Party and the opposition Democratic Party for the People took their first step toward working together on economic policies Thursday, an arrangement that, if successful, would mean a majority of parliamentary votes for issues especially important to the DPP.

Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and DPP leader Yuichiro Tamaki are expected to meet on Nov. 9 at the earliest. But the DPP remains adamant it will support Tamaki in the initial and possibly deciding round of the Nov. 11 parliamentary vote for a new prime minister.

On Thursday, LDP Secretary-General Hiroshi Moriyama and DPP Secretary-General Kazuya Shimba met to discuss ways forward.
