Thirty victims of investment fraud linked to fake online advertisements have filed lawsuits across the country against Meta Platforms — the owner of Facebook and Instagram — to seek damages amounting to around ¥435 million ($2.8 million).
The victims claim that Meta neglected to remove the ads, which used the names and photos of celebrities without permission, on its social media platforms. The lawsuits were filed on Tuesday in the district courts of Saitama, Chiba, Yokohama, Osaka and Kobe.
According to the lawsuits, the plaintiffs made investments that turned out to be fraudulent after being lured by the fake ads posted on Facebook and Instagram.
