Japan’s upcoming snap election, called with the tightest timeline in postwar history following the formation of a new administration, is causing disruptions at schools due to a clash with the autumn sports day season.

With voting day set for Oct. 27, elementary schools designated as polling stations have been forced to reschedule sports events and even some activities unrelated to schools are being canceled.

In the city of Kagoshima, 28 out of 64 municipal elementary schools that will serve as polling stations have had to change the dates of their sports days. At one school that moved its event up by a day, several parents expressed disappointment, with one saying, "I can’t attend the new date due to work."
