The Tokyo gubernatorial election has attracted a record number of candidates — 56 to be exact. That's so many that there’s not enough space on the wooden boards set up across the capital to display candidates’ posters, as these only have 48 spots each.
The Tokyo election committee's response to this was to ask eight candidates decided by lottery to insert their posters in a transparent folder and attach or stick it to the side of the wooden board frame.
Incumbent Yuriko Koike and former Upper House lawmaker Renho may be stealing the spotlight for the July 7 poll, but some other candidates highly unlikely to win are nonetheless running in the hope of gaining publicity during the campaign period.
