The ruling Liberal Democratic Party and junior coalition partner Komeito ended a monthlong feud that had threatened to split the more than two-decade-old coalition, agreeing Monday to support each other’s candidates in the Tokyo district for the next Lower House election.
The agreement, signed by Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and Komeito head Natsuo Yamaguchi, commits the LDP to supporting Komeito’s candidate for the Tokyo No. 29 district. In the remaining Tokyo districts where Komeito candidates are not running, Komeito will support LDP candidates “in accordance with individual circumstances.”
Furthermore, the parties will aim to secure two candidates for Komeito seats in Tokyo for a Lower House election that follows the next one, according to the agreement, also signed by LDP Secretary-General Toshimitsu Motegi and Komeito Secretary-General Keiichi Ishii.
