Police have arrested a 30-year-old man from Aomori Prefecture for allegedly making a false statement that he had been hit by a motorbike and that the driver had run away.

The man is an engineer at Japan Nuclear Fuel, a company constructing a spent nuclear fuel reprocessing plant in Rokkasho, Aomori Prefecture, investigative sources said.

According to police, Ryo Soma of Misawa, Aomori Prefecture, made a false emergency call on April 26 in Tokyo's Ota Ward while on his way to Haneda Airport to make a business trip to the United States.

Soma admitted to the charges, saying he "didn't want to go on a business trip."

When Soma visited a police station to answer questions as a victim of an accident, the Metropolitan Police Department arrested him on suspicion of obstructing police officers' business by making a false emergency call and also fraudulently receiving some ¥10,000 as daily allowance.

Soma had been claiming he had bodily pains and had been taken to hospital.

His call was found to be false after investigators failed to discover the motorbike he had claimed hit him.
