It has been over a year since the Tokyo Olympics, which were held under the slogan of the “reconstruction Olympics” after the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, came to a close on Aug. 8, 2021.
Disaster-hit areas had welcomed the Olympics as a great opportunity to express their gratitude for the support from around the world after the earthquake and tsunami of March 11, 2011, but the Tokyo 2020 Games were postponed for a year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
As exchange programs with the participating countries were scaled back across the board, the efforts to convey the message of recovery ended without a sense of accomplishment and municipalities that hosted portions of the Olympics and Paralympics are continuing to search for ways to pass on the legacy of the Games.
