President Donald Trump is directing the National Guard to assist border patrol agents along the U.S.-Mexico boundary, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said Wednesday.
Nielsen declined to say how many troops would be sent to the border or how long they would stay there but said the deployment "will be strong."
"It's time to act," Nielsen said. She added that, while details will be worked out with governors, "we do hope that the deployment begins immediately."
