The Pentagon was investigating the "unsafe" intercept Tuesday of a U.S. spy plane by two Chinese fighter jets in the South China Sea, the Department of Defense said Wednesday.
The incident took place in international airspace during what the U.S. called a "routine patrol."
The Pentagon said in a statement to The Japan Times that "initial reports characterized the incident as unsafe."
