Pope Francis opened his six-day U.S. tour on Tuesday, bringing a call for Americans to do more to fight poverty, curb climate change and help immigrants.
His visit runs through Sept. 27, and features stops in Washington, New York and Philadelphia. The highlights include meetings with President Barack Obama, an address to U.S. lawmakers and a Mass for as many as 1 million people in Philadelphia.
The U.S. government has declared the pope's visit a national security special event; federal, state and local authorities are taking unprecedented measures to protect the leader of world Catholics and the expected crowds. Washington, New York and Philadelphia are each maintaining websites with information on detours, street closings and public transportation.
