A United Nations entity dedicated to the empowerment of women opened its liaison office in Tokyo on Sunday, making Japan the first Asian nation to host such an office.
U.N. Women Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka said the Tokyo office will step up efforts to build a stronger partnership with the government and the people of Japan.
The office also supports Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's drive to improve the status of women both at home and abroad, Mlambo-Ngcuka, from South Africa, told a news conference before the official opening ceremony of the office in Bunkyo Ward.
