With Takeshi Onaga's election Sunday as governor of Okinawa, opponents of building a replacement facility in Nago's Henoko district for U.S. Marine Corps Air Station Futenma now have a powerful ally.
Their new strategy can best be summed up as "paralysis by analysis," a combination of administrative delays and legal wrangling they hope will put enough pressure on the central government, and perhaps the United States, to abandon the base relocation plan.
The final tally showed Onaga capturing 360,820 votes, nearly 100,000 more than outgoing Gov. Hirokazu Nakaima, who received 261,076. Voter turnout was 64.13 percent, up 3.25 points from the 2010 election.
