As Toshio Tamogami's candidacy in the Tokyo gubernatorial race raises concerns that his nationalistic views could worsen already strained ties with China and South Korea, Internet users were quick to question if his English skills were up to snuff.
Tamogami's Japanese profile on his official website has an English line that describes him as "the former chife of stuff,ASDF," presumably a carelessly translated version of "Former Chief of Staff, ASDF" (Air Self-Defense Force).
This drew a cynical Monday tweet in Japanese by a user named Aaron Madlon-Kay: "So Toshio Tamogami is 'the former chife of stuff'. . . and this is what his profile on the official website says. Is this Japan's English skill level?"
