Residents of Tokyo pay the highest monthly smartphone bills among seven major global cities, partly due to expensive data communications fees and the yen's strength, according to the Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry.

A survey of fiscal 2011 phone bills found that the average monthly total for a user who talks for 61 minutes and sends and receives 438 emails was ¥7,357.

Tokyo was followed by Dusseldorf at the equivalent of ¥7,012, New York at ¥6,493, and London, Paris and Stockholm at ¥3,000 to ¥4,000. Seoul residents had the lowest smartphone bills among the seven cities at ¥2,702.
