A Tokyo-based engineering design firm has won the Architectural Institute of Japan Prize this year for its development and application of a three-dimensional seismic isolation system, the company said.

Kozo Keikaku Engineering Inc. was awarded the prize with major contractor Shimizu Corp. for the system, which reduces both horizontal and vertical seismic movements.

The system was installed in an experimental residential building built by Shimizu right before the March 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake.
