A Japanese photographer died at Mount Everest Base Camp on Thursday, the organizer of his expedition said in Katmandu.

"Hiroaki Kino died at the base camp possibly from a heart attack," Tika Gurung, managing director of Bochi Bochi Trek in Katmandu, said Friday.

Kino, who was 48 according to his passport, departed for the camp 5,400 meters up the mountain on Sept. 5. He was planning to take pictures of solo alpinist Nobukazu Kuriki, who is attempting to reach the summit of the 8,848-meter peak, Gurung said.

"Kino's body was airlifted to Katmandu on Friday," Gurung said.
