At a shareholders' meeting June 29 of Suzuki Motor Corp., the major manufacturer of cars and motorcycles based in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture, an investor asked what measures the company is taking against the Tokai earthquake, the long-predicted killer temblor that could hit the region in the near future.
"We would like to consider first relocating our plants that are near the coastline or the nuclear plant. We shouldn't leave the burden of this issue to the next generation," said Vice President Toshihiro Suzuki.
Nearly two months after the Hamaoka nuclear power plant in Omaezaki, Shizuoka Prefecture, was shut down at the order of the government, Suzuki is considering a large-scale relocation of its facilities to safer areas to avoid damage by earthquake, tsunami or radiation contamination.
