KDDI Corp., the second-largest cell phone operator, said Monday that third-quarter profit fell as a slump in its wireless business offset improved earnings from fixed line service.

Net income fell to ¥65.7 billion in the three months ended Dec. 31 from ¥67.4 billion a year earlier, the Tokyo-based carrier said in a statement. The company left its full-year earnings outlook unchanged.

KDDI added fewer new mobile-phone users in the three-month period than rivals NTT DoCoMo Inc., the top mobile-phone operator, and Softbank Corp., Apple Inc.'s exclusive provider of the iPhone in the country.
