Newly appointed Bangladeshi Ambassador to Japan Majibur Rahman Bhuiyan wants to generate greater interest in Japan toward his country, especially its most important export items — ready-made garments.

During a courtesy visit to The Japan Times on Thursday, the ambassador noted that although Japan's interest in the garments has gradually grown in recent years, exports to Japan still represent only a small amount, worth only $300 million last year.

Bhuiyan said his country is trying to boost garment exports, saying, "Bangladesh has a long, strong tradition of finest quality garments such as muslin, which you'll find in mummies even."

The ambassador said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina plans to visit Japan next month. Her visit will be a good opportunity for Bangladesh to enhance ties with Japan, he said.

Bhuiyan was appointed ambassador in August.
