Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. has developed what it claims is the world's first hybrid supercharger system that generates electricity with heat from the exhaust gas of a diesel ship engine.
The MET83 MG system can reduce use of fuel and cut carbon dioxide emissions by 3 percent, the company said.
The supercharger system for large ships measures 4 meters in length and 1.2 meters in height, and weighs 15.7 tons. It can generate up to 750 kw, enough to cover all electricity used on a ship during a voyage.
