The Nikkei, Japan's top-selling financial newspaper, will raise its price for the first time in a decade as newsstand sales decline.

The cover price of the morning edition will rise to ¥160 on Jan. 1 from ¥140, according to a statement on the front page of Tuesday's newspaper. The evening edition's price will increase to ¥70 from ¥50.

It is the first price rise since 1998 for the morning edition, which sells about 3 million copies a day.

Closely held publisher Nikkei Inc. posted a net loss of ¥5.51 billion in the six months that ended June 30, compared with ¥5.98 billion profit a year earlier, because of a decline in advertising revenue and newspaper sales.

The Nikkei newspaper's monthly subscription fee will remain at ¥4,383.
