Fresh off an accord to form a coalition with two minor parties, Democratic Party of Japan President Yukio Hatoyama began compiling a list Thursday of possible candidates to form his new administration.
But one can rest assured that Hatoyama's ability to spot a lively partner measures up to former U.S. Presidents Bill Clinton, Ronald Reagan or even Abraham Lincoln, according to Time magazine.
Referring to Hatoyama's wife, Miyuki, 66, as being "literally out of this world," the online version of the news magazine earlier this week ranked the former actress as one of the "Top 10 Colorful First Spouses," alongside U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, Nancy Reagan and Mary Todd Lincoln.
While referring to the incoming prime minister as "one of the duller members of a fairly colorless profession," the article reported that his eccentric wife claimed in a book that her soul traveled on a UFO to Venus. She also confessed to "eating the sun" during a television interview, Time magazine said.
The magazine article also touches on other quirky first ladies, including Nancy Reagan, who claimed to speak with her late husband at night, and Mary Todd Lincoln, who is said to have attempted communicating with her dead son through occult gatherings.
