Confidence among merchants rose to a 14-month high in May, adding to evidence that the economy is recovering from its deepest postwar recession, a government survey showed Monday.
The Economy Watchers index, a survey of barbers, taxi drivers and others who deal with consumers, climbed to 36.7 from 34.2 in April, the Cabinet Office said. It was the highest level since March 2008.
