NTT DoCoMo Inc. said Tuesday it plans to sell a cell phone that uses Google Inc.'s Android software to compete with Apple Inc.'s iPhone offered by rival Softbank Corp.

The handset, equipped with a touch screen, is to go on sale as early as next month. It is made by Taiwan's HTC Corp.

DoCoMo and Softbank are launching models for Net surfing and software, music and video downloads to bolster demand for data services as revenue from voice traffic slumps.
