A Pakistani man was arrested Monday on suspicion of murdering a Russian woman he had been stalking in Soka, Saitama Prefecture, police said.
Mohammad Alam, 38, a factory worker, allegedly stabbed Korpacheva Anastasia Vitaljevna, 23, a housewife, in the neck with a kitchen knife after a dispute on a street near the Ayase River around noon Friday, police said.
Alam has reportedly admitted to the allegation.
Police are investigating Alam's motive and how he and Korpacheva got acquainted.
Alam said he was having an affair with her, according to police.
Korpacheva visited a police station with her Japanese husband, a 57-year-old office worker, about an hour before the incident and filed a complaint that Alam had been stalking her, police said. Her husband was at home at the time of the attack, they said.
Police found a knife believed to be the murder weapon in the Ayase River about 20 meters downstream from the site of the attack.
