The Democratic Party of Japan's leadership agreed Thursday to merge with Kokumin Shinto (People's New Party), DPJ leader Naoto Kan told reporters.
DPJ President Ichiro Ozawa will meet Kokumin Shinto leader Tamisuke Watanuki Friday morning to officially propose the merger.
The DPJ is the largest opposition force, while Kokumin Shinto is a minor opposition party with nine lawmakers.
According to a DPJ lawmaker who attended Thursday's executive meeting, the idea met with no opposition.
