Information-inputting errors by Air Canada led Japan Airlines Corp., All Nippon Airways Co. and their agents to collect excessive fuel surcharges for connecting flights, the tourism ministry and the two Japanese airlines said Wednesday.
The overcharges occurred on trans-Pacific flights operated by the Japanese airlines with connecting Air Canada flights both within Canada and between the United States and Canada. The tickets were issued between April 1, 2006, and May 9 this year, and on June 3, the ministry and airlines said.
JAL mistakenly collected an extra ¥65 million from more than 4,200 passengers, while ANA collected ¥37 million too much from more than 2,400 passengers, they said.
The ministry said it instructed JAL and ANA to refund the overcharges, and asked Air Canada to prevent a recurrence.
JAL and ANA will inform their customers and start handing out refunds Thursday, the ministry said.
An Air Canada spokesman was not available for comment.
